SEO vs Google Ads: which should a small business do first?

One builds slowly and keeps working. The other works quickly and stops when you stop paying. Here is how to choose.

Should a small business start with SEO or Google Ads?

Start with Google Ads if you need enquiries in the next few weeks, and start with SEO if you can wait a few months for results that keep coming without paying for every click. Most small businesses end up doing both: ads bring in customers now, while SEO builds the steady search traffic that makes the business less dependent on ad spend over time.

How long does SEO take to work?

Expect real movement from SEO in two to four months, and then it compounds. Search engines need time to find, trust and rank your pages, so the early months are about getting the foundations right: your Google Business Profile, the keywords your customers use, and a site that is fast and clear.

How fast do Google Ads bring in enquiries?

Google Ads can start bringing in enquiries within the first few weeks, because your ad shows as soon as the campaign is live. The catch is that the traffic stops the day the budget stops. Ads also need a clear next step to land on, which is why we pair campaigns with a landing page built to turn the click into an enquiry.

What is local SEO, and does my business need it?

Local SEO is how you show up when people nearby search for what you do, in Google Maps and in the local results, and most businesses with a service area or a shopfront need it. It starts with a complete, active Google Business Profile, and it is the first thing we set up in our Foundations plan.

What does each one cost you?

Google Ads cost you a fee for every click plus the time or fee to manage the campaigns, while SEO costs you time or fees but nothing per visit. That is why the two behave so differently: ad costs rise with every extra visitor, while the cost of SEO work stays roughly the same as the traffic it brings grows.

How do you know which one is working?

Track what each enquiry costs from each channel, not just clicks or rankings. A cheap click that never turns into a call is not a good deal. We report cost per lead for ads and progress for search every month, in plain English, so you can see which one is paying its way.
